Sulphur is a mineral found in all cells of the body. It helps to keep hair, skin, bone, cartilage and tendons strong and healthy.

Sulphur is needed for the production of keratin, a protein which is found in all cells of the body and is essential for the formation of bone, cartilage and tendons. It is also needed for digestion, elimination and bile secretion as well as production of the hormone insulin, which keeps blood sugar levels in balance.

Research has shown that adequate levels of sulphur have a detoxifying effect on the body and help it to rid itself of harmful toxins such as lead and cyanide. It can also relieve the symptoms of conditions like arthritis, eczema, psoriasis and hemorrhoids.

A sulphur deficiency could result skin problems and poor growth, especially of the hair and nails. It could also inhibit the functioning of body processes.

What foods contain sulphur? Sulphur is found in a number of food additives, in the form sodium sulphate, potassium sulphate, etc. Natural food sources of sulphur are all protein-rich foods, including:

  • Pulses
  • beans
  • eggs
  • peas
  • cabbage
  • pineapple
  • avocado
  • lettuce
